Leather, Grain and Stitching

Leather changes both the colour field around a watch and the scale of its detail. A smooth surface makes the stitching conspicuous. A scale pattern adds larger repeating shapes. A suede-like nap softens reflections, while rally perforations introduce actual openings and a more sporting rhythm.

Grain is not proof of species

Alligator leather and alligator-embossed calfskin are different products. Hirsch's Modena, for example, is explicitly calfskin with alligator embossing. You cannot determine the animal or construction from a scale pattern alone. Hirsch Modena.

Suede needs its own care expectations: Hirsch warns that its Serro suede is sensitive to moisture. Rally refers to the perforated design, not a different animal; Hirsch's Rally uses calf leather and explains the holes through a racing-glove reference. Hirsch suede, Hirsch Rally.

Construction around the surface

A leather strap can include an upper skin, lining, padding, finished edges and stitching. Those layers affect thickness and flexibility. A bulky padded strap and a thin, flat one can share the same visible grain yet sit very differently against a case or buckle.

Tone-on-tone thread keeps the outline quiet; cream, red or blue makes the seam a deliberate accent. Colour contrast is not evidence of hand sewing or stronger construction. Check the actual maker's specification and care advice: Hamilton, for example, advises protecting its leather straps from water, cosmetics and prolonged sun exposure. In the atelier

Smooth calf, Alligator, Suede and Rally are procedural graphic appearances, not selectable animal products. Every leather strap has a straight body. Tan, brown, black and oxblood adjust colour; stitching adds another independent accent. Rally holes pass through the illustrated strap and lining. The optional Bund pad adds a broad layer beneath the case, changing the silhouette and hiding part of the underside.
