Choosing a Calibre
Mechanical hands, analog quartz or an electronic display: choose the function and a case that genuinely accommodates the model.
Start with what you want to read: time alone, a date, another time zone or elapsed time. Then choose a mechanism able to supply those indications. A decorative hand cannot create a function that the movement lacks.
Three ways to power a display
A conventional mechanical watch stores energy in a mainspring. A hand-wound calibre receives that energy through the crown; an automatic adds a rotor and winding mechanism. The ETA 6498-1 and ETA 2824-2 make the distinction visible.
Quartz describes a different regulating principle. A common electronic time base is 32,768 Hz, not one cycle per second; electronics divide that frequency to drive the display. Seiko's specification is one documented example. Seiko quartz oscillator specification.
Read specifications, not rankings
Frequency, reserve and jewel count describe different things. More jewels do not automatically mean more precision. A manufacturer's minimum reserve and typical reserve should not be treated as the same promise. The finished watch's performance also depends on its execution, assembly and condition.
A real build needs matching dimensions, stem height, dial feet, hand fits, movement support and clearances. The Atelier's compatibility rules keep the visible display coherent; they are not a verified parts shopping list.
In the atelier
Analog and Digital are separate display types. Named analog calibres control seconds layout and supported calendars or chronographs; Classic LCD, Rugged LCD and Retro LED are original electronic modules, not mechanical calibres with their hands hidden.
Named mechanical bodies retain their source-sized diameters across admitted cases, with a separate holder supporting the rear assembly. Oversized references are rejected, not capped or shrunk. The ETA 6498 has a 36.60 mm casing diameter and a wider 37.20 mm front flange; both are included, at their distinct depths. It therefore needs Round large in this catalogue; selecting a case is an explicit choice, not automatic case enlargement. ETA casing section, page 7.
Published movement heights are reserved independently from the illustrated rear relief and hand stack. Holders and support surfaces bridge the real modelled gap; they do not certify stem, dial-foot or hand-hole interchangeability. Front layouts use fixed component positions and rigid hand sweeps rather than normalizing every part to fill a case. Skeleton artwork remains an original interpretation, not a maker's openworked mechanism. This is not CAD fit validation.
The analog quartz rear uses a fixed original component module inside a separate polymer-style holder, with battery, coil and covered gearing informed by the Miyota 2035. It is not that named calibre reproduced at its exact dimensions; the source's three-hand specification does not establish the concept's optional calendar construction. It is also distinct from the three electronic screen modules.
The Quartz concept, Pointer-date concept and Power-reserve concept are explicitly illustrative. No battery life is specified for the unnamed quartz study. The reserve study uses a stated 48-hour design target, not a measured mechanism. Fit checks reject incompatible mechanism, face, control and attachment choices with an explanation.
