Tool-watch hands

Tool-watch hands make their outline easy to recognise. A broad hour symbol can help distinguish hours from minutes at a glance, while a pointed minute hand still lands clearly on its scale. The result depends on the whole dial: a large hand is not automatically readable over large, similarly coloured markers.

Five visual families

Sword hands have a blade-like taper. Syringe hands put a very fine tip on a wider body; Patek Philippe explicitly uses that description for luminous hands on its 5322G. A cathedral hand suggests a framed, compartmented shape, a name Hamilton uses for the Khaki Field Murph. These names describe silhouettes, not a guarantee of military or diving certification. Mercedes-style describes the familiar three-spoked circular hour-hand motif. Snowflake uses an angular, diamond-like enlargement. Tudor dates its snowflake design to its 1969 catalogue and explains the practical intention: leave generous room for luminous material. Pairing shape and lume

Try a strongly shaped hour hand with a simpler minute pointer. Then compare daylight and luminous display: the visible metal outline and the glowing area need not tell the same story. A highly decorative pair can obscure a small register, so check more than the default hand position when judging a real design.

In the atelier

These are recognisable, simplified shape studies, not branded replacement parts. Mercedes and snowflake are restricted to the hour-hand choice; supported minute styles can be set independently. Luminous inserts follow the preview geometry but do not calculate pigment volume or tested legibility. A tool-watch silhouette and a depth inscription do not make the simulated watch a certified diving instrument.
