The Power Reserve
A reserve indicator is a display of stored energy, not an accuracy meter or a decorative seconds counter.
A power-reserve indicator helps an owner see how much energy remains in the mainspring. It is particularly useful before setting a watch down, because an automatic does not keep winding itself while it sits motionless.
Read the scale in context
A display may show hours, a full-to-empty arc or another graduated form. Seiko's 6R64 instructions explain that the indicator follows the mainspring's winding state and that actual running time depends on use. Its figures belong to that particular movement, not to every watch with a similar gauge. Seiko's reserve-indicator instructions.
The indication should not be read as a direct accuracy measurement. A scale showing plenty of remaining energy does not tell you how well the watch has been regulated.
It needs a mechanism
Adding a small hand and arc to a dial is the visible part of the idea. A real reserve display also needs a way to relate the mainspring's winding and unwinding to the indication. Its construction must be part of the movement or a specifically designed module.
For a composition, give that arc space to breathe. Crowding it with a lower signature or small-seconds register makes both displays harder to understand.
In the atelier
Power reserve selects the Atelier reserve study, with a stated 48-hour design target. It is not a stock Soprod P024 with an invented built-in complication. The gauge is shown at a fixed illustrative level of 68%; it does not wind up when you drag the watch, run down while the page is open, or measure rotor energy.
Choose it to explore the dial arrangement. For a physically buildable watch, a watchmaker would still need to specify and validate the mechanism behind the display.
