Vertical and Horizontal Ovals

An oval changes direction without adding a corner. Turn its long axis through a quarter turn and the entire watch feels different: a vertical oval extends along the wrist, while a horizontal oval spreads across it. That change does not require rotating the way you read the time.

Not every ellipse has the same proportions

Cartier's Baignoire is a vertical-oval reference. Patek Philippe's Golden Ellipse offers a different outline and proportion: the cited 5738P measures 34.5 by 39.5 mm. The short dimension still matters

A conventional hand rotates through the whole circle. A minute hand that reaches the long end of a narrow ellipse may hit its side a quarter turn later. Extending and retracting it would be a different mechanism. Likewise, a rectangular screen must fit at its corners, not merely match the opening's width at the centre.

In the atelier

Both families keep 12 toward the upper strap. Their analog apertures follow the outline, but the hands have fixed lengths chosen to clear a complete revolution. Minute marks lie on actual time-bearing rays; they are not equally spaced by distance around the oval.

The electronic screen stays rectangular inside a supported shaped faceplate. Named movements are not flattened into ovals. Choose an admitted size and mechanism; a larger inscription or incompatible calibre can fail the same physical layout check.
